For me, a recent example would be Fiona Bevan, co-writer on the Backstreet Boys’ recent hit song “Chances”. I had never heard of her, but am now aware of her and will be keeping an eye on what she releases next.
I have to admit that I’ve long suspected this, but when you are young and impressionable you want to believe that those in elite positions of power in the industry know exactly what is big, what will be big, and that every decision they make is infallible. As I have moved forward, meeting more and more people on higher and higher levels, I have discovered that answers to the same questions vary wildly from person to person.
First off, I want to preface this by saying that any musician that tells you a song is only good if it’s lyrics are deep, or a song is always bad if it’s lyrics are simple, is wrong. Music is a matter of taste. I love pop music, always have, and some of the best written and catchiest pop songs are incredibly simple lyrically. That doesn’t mean they were easy to write though. Pop is an art form just like jazz, ragtime, classical, soul, R&B, etc. In fact the roots of pop come from jazz.
For whatever reason, we’ve developed this super-hero like expectation from our politicians. They are fine human beings until they become Congressmen or women, then suddenly, overnight, they become scumbags.
